My Mom was forced to live at the Bristal by her “law” guardian, Mary Giordano and Judge Joel Asarch for a period of 30 days. She and Anne Recht called it an “experiment.” Mom was denied contact with all family members, phone and visits, for a period of two weeks, so that she would “acclimate” to her new surroundings. She was not even allowed contact with her lawyer! For this, Mom was charged $53,000. I have been trying to get a breakdown of these charges for over a year without any luck. I wrote to Maryellen, hoping she will respond. This is my letter to her:
I was wondering if you would be able to help me. My Mom, Dorothy Wilson, stayed at the Bristal in Massapequa November 2010 until December 6, 2010. She was actually forced to stay there because she was under the guardianship of Mary Giordano of Franchina and Giordano in Garden City, NY. Mary Giordano and the geriatric care manager, Anne Recht, insisted Mom would be better off there than in her own home with an aide. We were advised that the cost of this 30 day stay would be the same as the cost of an aide in her home, approximately $4000.00. However, the final cost, according to Mary Giordano, was a whopping $53,000. I have never been able to get the full breakdown of that number. While I did get the actual printout of the bill, none of the numbers matched with the actual payouts. Obviously, unless one is extraordinarily wealthy, no one can afford to pay that kind of money per month. Is there any way you can help me find out two things? One: the actual cost and two: why the cost was so high? I have not been able to get a response from Mary Giordano. Mom passed away October 23, 2011 and I am the executrix of her will. I am trying to reconcile all of the monies and I need some assistance.
Thank you so much for your time.
